Ireland weather: Met Eireann warns of prolonged rain but major change is on the way

While the weather is set to start out largely dry today the rain is set to make a quick return early in the afternoon.

Met Eireann has said that while there will be a range of sunny spells gracing the country northern and eastern areas it will be cloudier across the south and west with isolated showers.

And on top of that more prolonged rain will develop there by this afternoon, then extend north-eastwards across the country during the afternoon with heavy falls expected later.

Afternoon temperatures will reach 10 to 13 degrees generally. However, they will rise to 14 or 15 degrees in Munster in the evening

However the national forecaster has predicted a major change in the weather later in the week with much of the rain to clear with more dry weather and sunny spells to reach the country ahead of the weekend.

A forecaster said: "Thursday will be mainly dry with just a few showers in the morning and good sunny spells. There'll be another spell of rain moving in from the northwest during the evening. Highest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees with light to moderate northwest winds.

"On Thursday night, rain in the northwest will move through Ulster and Connacht pushing southwards in to Munster and Leinster and becoming patchier in nature as it does so. Lowest temperatures between 5 and 7 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds backing southwesterly and freshening.

"Friday will see rain clearing quickly to widespread showers with sunny spells. Winds will be light to moderate westerly and temperatures will be between 10 and 12 degrees.

"Showers will become confined to western coasts on Friday evening and the rest of the country will be mainly dry for the night. Lowest temperatures between 4 degrees in the east and 6 degrees in the west.

"Saturday will be mainly dry with light to moderate northwest winds. There'll be a few showers in the northwest early on, these dying out as the day goes on.

"Temperatures unchanged generally, between 11 and 13 degrees at best, falling to between 3 and 5 degrees in clear skies overnight.

"Sunday will stay largely dry with sunny spells and mainly light winds."
