Ireland weather: Met Eireann warning lingers on but sudden change forecast

Met Eireann 's low temperature warning for the entire country lingers on today until midday.

Temperatures will remain below freezing well into the day in many areas.

Irish people have been warned to beware of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces and dangerous driving conditions.

Thickening cloud will bring drizzle and patchy light rain to the northwest this morning and this will slowly spread southwards through the day. However it will remain dry through most of Leinster and Munster with some sunshine. Another cold day with highs of just 1 to 4 degrees.

Tonight, temperatures will fall to between +2 and -3 degrees with another widespread frost.

A cold start to Sunday with patchy fog slow to clear. A mostly dry day, but there will be the odd spot of drizzle at times, especially in the west. It will be a little less cold than previous days, with maximums of 3 to 7 degrees, highest in the west.

A change is coming with the weather becoming milder and more unsettled with rain on Monday, Tuesday and early Wednesday.

It will be drier and slightly cooler towards the end of the week. Temperatures will recover to slightly above average for January, as winds turn westerly.

Sunday night will be rather cloudy overnight with further patchy drizzle across the west and north becoming heavier by dawn, but holding mostly dry elsewhere. Some patchy frost is possible in the southeast, but less cold than previous nights. Lows of 2 to 6 degrees.

Monday will be cloudy with rain in the west and north in the morning spreading to all areas through the afternoon with highs of 8 to 10 degrees.

Tuesday will be another cloudy, damp day with rain at times with highs of 7 to 10 degrees.

Rain will clear to scattered showers on Wednesday and remaining rather cloudy.

Thursday will be mostly dry with sunny spells, and just a few scattered showers in the west.

It is forecast to be mostly dry on Friday, but rain will move in from the west later in the day.
