Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of winter turn as famous postman shares white Christmas update

Met Eireann are warning that conditions are set to turn colder next week as a famous Donegal postman has shared an update on his white Christmas prediction.

Michael Gallagher is known for making his long-term weather forecasts by observing the behaviour of plants and animals.

He has already given his white Christmas prediction, telling RSVP Live: "We are in for a very, very cold winter.

"And I know there will be snow, and it will be close to Christmas Day. It will be there or thereabouts."

And now he has shared his recipe for a traditional chicken soup, which he says is a great winter warmer.

"In the olden times they used to make chicken soup for the cold weather, it's great for keeping you warm!" he said.

"Children and young people would take it in the mornings but you could have it any time of day, it's lovely to have when you come in after a walk in the afternoon.

"You can make a big pot and then you have enough to last you a few days, you can just heat it up when you want it.

"It’s so simple, it's good for you, and good if you have a cold or flu as well."

Meanwhile conditions will settle down somewhat later today and tomorrow, although plenty of wet weather is still expected.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "There'll be further showers or longer spells of rain this evening and tonight, with more persistent rain in the southwest moving north overnight, clearing once again to showers over the southern half of the country by morning.

"Temperatures overnight will be between 7 and 10 degrees, falling to between 4 and 6 degrees around dawn. Winds will ease moderate to fresh southerly, remaining strong on coasts.

"Rain or showers for tomorrow, Sunday, particularly in the first half of the day over the northern half of the country, with sunny spells and scattered showers elsewhere. Afternoon temperatures will reach 8 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds."

And as we move into next week weather experts warned it's going to turn colder and drier, with a risk of frost returning.

A forecaster added: "Rain in the west by dawn on Monday, extending eastwards to all areas through the morning and afternoon. Highs of 12 or 13 degrees, in fresh southwest winds, strong on coasts.

"Cloudy with showers in the west and north Monday night. A mild and breezy night with temperatures not falling below 10 degrees.

"Mild, breezy and cloudy on Tuesday, with patchy rain in the south and west. Highs of 13 to 15 degrees, in fresh to strong southerly winds.

"Sunny spells with showers on Wednesday, most frequent in the west and north, with a spell of more persistent rain in the northwest later. Highs in the morning of 9 or 10 degrees, but turning colder through the afternoon as a cold front crosses the country. Fresh to strong southwest winds, veering northwest later.

"Cool and mostly dry on Thursday, with sunny spells. Highs of 7 to 9 degrees, in a moderate northwest breeze.

"Frost on Thursday night with lows of +2 to -2 degrees."
