Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of flooding - but change coming as weekend forecast offers hope

Met Eireann have warned of flooding as "heavy bursts" are set to hit this morning - but the forecast for this weekend offers hope of some dry and sunny weather.

And it's not all bad news as it will turn warmer and even sunnier later on today, with even hotter conditions tomorrow as highs of 23C are expected in places.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Generally dull and breezy today with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle to begin. Some very heavy bursts will lead to spot flooding.

"Whilst it will dry up in most areas this afternoon, intermittent rain and drizzle will persist across Atlantic counties, especially along the west coast.

"Humid, with hill and coastal fog, but rather warm where sunny spells break through. Highest temperatures 16 to 21 or 22 degrees Celsius, warmest in the south and southeast. West to southwest winds will be mostly moderate to fresh in strength.

"Very mild and humid tonight with patchy rain and drizzle, mainly affecting Atlantic counties, especially later tonight. Misty with hill and coastal fog too. Lowest temperatures 12 to 15 degrees Celsius, in light to moderate west to southwest breezes.

"Scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue to affect Atlantic counties on Tuesday, heaviest along the coast.

"Drier elsewhere, outside of patchy drizzle, and warm where sunshine develops. Humid, again with hill and coastal fog. Highest temperatures ranging 16 to 23 degrees Celsius (west to east). Moderate southwest breezes will be fresher near coasts."

There will be further mixed conditions for the rest of the week with both sunny spells and showers, but experts are predicting "a lot of dry weather" this weekend.

A forecaster added: "Dry with a mix of cloud and some sunny spells on Wednesday - just isolated showers. Fresher in moderate, occasionally fresh northwest winds. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius, mildest in the southeast. Chilly overnight with lowest temperatures 5 to 9 degrees Celsius and light westerly breezes.

"Most areas staying dry once again on Thursday with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Cooler though with highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees Celsius, in light southwest breezes.

"Wet across Ulster and Connacht to begin on Friday, with rainfall extending to other areas during the day, though turning scattered. Highest temperatures 15 to 18 degrees Celsius, mildest and driest in the southeast.

"Current indications suggest the weekend will bring a lot of dry weather with mild spells of sunshine and southerly breezes."
