Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of -3C winter plunge as expert issues big snow update

Met Eireann have predicted a wintry turn later this week as temperatures plunge to -3C.

While another weather expert has issued an update on the possibility of snow as "cold air" hits Ireland from the north.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said there will be some wintry showers, but mostly on higher ground, and said lying snow is unlikely.

However a combination of rain, sleet and snow could potentially hit some lower areas at times.

He explained: "An interesting setup in the weather this week. Charts show Atlantic ridge with Jet Stream dropping South and cold air plunging down from North. Low system on Friday could see some wintry showers but mainly on high ground. Stay up to date with weather forecasts this week.

"This means it will get cold but don’t expect lying snow. It’s very difficult to forecast snow in these setups but it is most likely any snow will be on high ground Thursday into Friday. There could be a wintry mix in some lower areas though with rain, sleet and snow for a time."

Meanwhile today will be mostly dry early on before some showers start to move across the country, with lows of 0C later tonight.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry in many areas early this morning with patches of mist and fog. Rain and drizzle in Ulster and Connacht will gradually move southwards, reaching southern areas this afternoon. Parts of south Munster will stay mainly dry. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, with moderate to fresh westerly winds.

"Tonight, Munster and Connacht will be mostly cloudy with patchy drizzle, mist and fog and with lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees. Much of Leinster and Ulster will be dry with clear spells and some frost with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.

"Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a fair amount of dry weather and a little patchy drizzle. Some brighter intervals at times too. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees with light westerly or variable breezes."

And from Wednesday we will see the start of bitterly cold overnight temperatures for the next few days.

A forecaster added: "On Wednesday morning, rain and drizzle will clear eastwards. Sunny spells and showers will follow. Showers will develop over the western half of the country during the day. It will become natively colder with afternoon temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees and moderate to fresh westerly winds. On Wednesday night, showers will continue and will extend further east, some heavy or of hail. Frost may develop in sheltered areas.

"Thursday will be cold with sunshine and heavy showers, some of hail and possible thundery and becoming increasingly wintry in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with moderate west to northwest winds. On Thursday night, wintry showers will affect western coastal counties. Many areas will be dry with clear spells and a sharp frost with icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees.

"Friday will continue cold with heavy showers or longer spells of rain moving southwards over the country. Some of the showers will be wintry with a risk of hail and thunder. It will also become windy with fresh to strong and very gusty north to northwest winds, strongest along west and north coasts. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees. On Friday night, there'll be further showers, but clear spells also and with frost in places. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees with northerly winds decreasing moderate to fresh.

"Saturday will continue cold with sunshine and showers, some of hail or thunder. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with moderate northeast winds. Saturday night will be cold with a sharp forts and icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees.

"Sunday will bring sunshine and some further showers. It will be cold with highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees and with frost at night."
