Ireland weather: Met Eireann update weekend forecast as winter to arrive with a bang

Met Eireann have updated their weekend weather forecast with temperatures now expected to fall below zero.

Weather chiefs expect conditions as cold as -2C on Saturday night with lows -1C on Friday night.

House owners are warned to be prepared for the chilly change and have the heating and fires at the ready.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tonight will be cold and predominantly dry with frost forming in long clear spells. Isolated mist patches may also form inland in light winds.

"Minimum temperatures will generally be between -1C to 3C, coldest inland. Temperatures holding between 5C to 7C in the southwest where rain and drizzle will continue early in the night.

"Tomorrow will be a dry day overall, bar a few light scattered showers in Ulster in the morning.

"It'll be a bright, crisp day with sunshine and a moderate northerly breeze. Maximum temperatures of 11C to 15C, mildest in the southwest.

"Dry, calm, cold and mostly clear Saturday night with lowest temperatures ranging a chilly -2C to +2C. Some frost will set in, along with mist and fog patches."

At the moment the cold weather isn't expected to last much longer than this weekend with more mild conditions next week.

The forecaster added: "Changeable into the early days of next with more unsettled weather following as of midweek."
