Ireland weather: Met Eireann says temperatures will plummet to -2C before even worse change next week

Temperatures will drop to -2C tonight as Ireland experiences its first real taste of winter.

Met Eireann has said that long, clear spells will allow the temperature plummet, which is also set to bring widespread frost.

And to top it off, next week is looking pretty bleak, with strong winds and heavy rain set to arrive on Tuesday, lasting until at least the weekend.

A forecaster said: "Today will be dry overall, bar a few light scattered showers in Ulster through this morning. It'll be a bright, crisp day with good spells of sunshine in a cool, light to moderate northerly breeze. Maximum temperatures of 12C to 14C.

"Dry and cold tonight with a widespread frost. Long clear spells will allow temperatures to drop to between +2C and -2C. Some mist and fog patches will develop in a light breeze.

"A sunny start on Sunday with frost clearing, leading to another generally dry day with hazy sunshine, brightest in the east. Cloud will steadily increase in the west through the late morning and afternoon bringing some drizzle to western counties by evening. Maximum temperatures of 13C to 17C, in a light southwest breeze, freshening on western coasts later.

"Scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will move into western and central counties overnight. The rain most persistent in the west, breaking up as it moves across the country. Milder than previous nights, with lows of 6C to 8C in the east, 10C to 12C in the west. Light to moderate southerly winds, fresh to strong on western coasts. "

Monday and Tuesday will remain mostly mild, before things become rather wet and blustery from Tuesday night.

The national forecaster believes the rest of the week will see a mix of mostly heavy rain and strong winds.
