Ireland weather: Met Eireann's weekend forecast as one big 'risk' and very Irish trend highlighted

Things are going to get cold in Ireland this weekend – particularly at night.

Met Eireann's weekend forecast predicts that temperatures will drop to zero (and even below) over the next few evenings.

The baltic conditions will come even as a spell of high pressure brings "dry and calm" weather at time during the day, according to the national forecaster.

In true Irish fashion, dry and calm does not mean there won't be any rain: showers, rain and drizzle will hit different parts of the country every day for the next four days.

But it's at night that things start to get slightly extreme, with the mercury set to dive right down to zero – despite the fact that we're nearly in March.

There's even a risk, says Met Eireann, of frost on many of the nights over the next week.

On Saturday night, lowest temperatures could plumb the depths, clocking in at between zero and three degrees.

And Sunday will be even colder, with conditions possibly in the minus for the first time in a while.

Next week will also dawn with a cold night, the thermometer potentially showing us zero once again.

Here's all you need to know about Ireland's weather over the weekend.

Thursday

A dry and bright morning for many, with scattered showers in the western half of the country easing in intensity.

More widespread showers will develop in the afternoon, showers generally light and mixed with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with a moderate westerly breeze.

Thursday night

Tonight will be dry and clear in most areas with a slight frost.

Any lingering showers will largely die out, becoming isolated and confined to western and southwestern coastal areas overnight where it will be cloudiest.

Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with light to moderate southerly breezes.

Friday

Friday will be a largely dry day.

Well scattered showers in the west and southwest in the morning with good sunshine elsewhere. Becoming cloudier in the afternoon as showers drift northeastwards in a moderate southerly breeze.

Breezes will strengthen on western coasts during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

Friday night

Light rain and drizzle will develop in western coastal counties early in the night, with drier weather further east.

The rain will break up and become patchy as it moves eastwards across the country overnight.

Light to moderate southwest breezes will be fresh on western coasts for a time. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees.

Saturday

Cloudy in many areas to begin, brightening up through the morning.

There will be occasional outbreaks of light showery rain or drizzle during the day.

The western half of the country will have the best of the sunny spells through the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light southwest or variable winds.

Saturday night

A largely dry night with patchy drizzle on coasts. Fog will likely form under clear skies and light variable winds.

Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.

Sunday

Fog will be slow to clear during the morning with very light or calm winds.

It will be dry with low cloud lingering throughout the day in many areas, some drizzle possible near western coasts.
