Ireland weather: Met Eireann's updated forecast with stormy period pinpointed as more horrid conditions arrive

Ireland will get some momentary respite from the awful weather today and on Monday before more stormy conditions make their way across the country.

The entire country was under a status yellow warning on Saturday but there are no such warnings in place today, nor are any expected in the next 24 hours.

The national forecaster is however expecting the weather to take a turn on Monday night with more gale force winds on the way.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Breezy today with sunny spells and scattered showers. Showers will be heaviest and most frequent in Atlantic coastal counties with isolated thunderstorms possible but staying mostly dry in the east of the country. Maximum temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in fresh south to southwest winds.

"Largely dry tonight apart from a few showers in west Munster and west Connacht. Becoming quite cold with a risk of frost. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in light or moderate southerly breezes.

"Plenty of dry and bright weather across the country on Monday with sunny spells. However, a few showers will develop in Munster and west Connacht. Top temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in freshening southeast winds.

"On Monday night, it will turn increasingly windy with south to southeast gales developing on coasts. Rain will develop in the southwest and west early in the night, before extending nationwide after midnight. Heavy falls, especially in the southwest with a risk of localised flooding. Minimum temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees early on but turning milder later."

And Tuesday is likely to be much the same until the weather starts to ease up again towards the end of the week.

The forecaster added: "It looks set to be a wet and very windy day on Tuesday with further spells of heavy rain pushing northwards over the country accompanied by strong to gale force southerly winds.

"A continued risk of localised flooding. Mild despite the inclement weather conditions with highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees. Rain will tend to linger into Tuesday night, especially across the east and south with some drier periods in the west and north. Staying windy and mild with lows of 7 to 10 degrees."
