Ireland weather: Met Eireann's unusual warning for entire country as 'difficult' conditions to hit

A Status Yellow fog warning is in effect for all of Ireland with hazardous conditions forecast.

The alert for the whole country is in place from 5.35am until 9am on Tuesday.

The national forecaster says fog will develop in some areas with reduced visibility leading to "difficult travel conditions".

Frost and fog will clear throughout the morning as winds increase to leave a dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells for most.

However, patchy light rain or drizzle will develop at times mostly along northwest and southern coasts, with highest temperatures of 6 to 10C.

Tuesday night will be generally cloudy with light patchy rain or drizzle pushing into the northwest in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

It will stay largely dry elsewhere with some clear spells in the south. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9C generally but under any clear spells and slacker winds away from the coasts in the south and east, temperatures will fall back to between 1 and 4C with the chance of localised frost and fog.

A forecaster said for Wednesday: "Cloudy with outbreaks of rain developing over the northern half of the country. Staying drier with sunny spells in the south, with just patches of drizzle possible at times in southwest Munster. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11C.

"Mostly cloudy with patchy outbreaks of rain in the west [on Wednesday night]. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9C with mist and fog develop in light southerly breezes.

"A fairly cloudy but dry [Thursday] morning, but some sunny spells will extend from the southwest during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11C."

They continued for Thursday night: "Clear spells early with lows in northern parts of 3 to 6C, a milder 7 to 9C further south where cloud will increase early in the night extending to all parts by morning. Mist and fog patches will form once again in mostly light southerly breezes.

"After a mostly cloudy and foggy start [on Friday], sunny spells will extend from the south as southeasterly winds increase light to moderate. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11C.

"Cloud and fog will persist on Saturday as light southeasterly winds fall calm in places while some patchy drizzle will develop along southern and western coasts. Highest temperatures of 5 to 9C.

"Cloudy once again with fog gradually clearing in light easterly breezes [on Sunday]. Highs of 5 to 9C."
