Ireland weather: Met Eireann's miserable forecast for the week and update on chances of heat returning

It is hard to believe that Ireland was struggling to contend with 30C temperatures just ten days ago when looking at Met Eireann's forecast for the first week of August.

The national forecaster is predicting that the next few days will bring conditions the country is much more used to, which means one thing: rain.

The Bank Holiday was an unsettled day for many areas, with the weather set to be mercurial in the week ahead.

According to Met Eireann, we can expect showers, thunder, and even fog before the week is out, with little chance of the mercury rising above 20C.

Today will start off dry with bright spells and just a few showers.

However, scattered showers will become more widespread during the day, some of them heavy and possibly thundery, with a risk of localised flooding.

The rain will become more persistent along the west and southwest coasts, turning heavier later and extending eastwards over much of Munster, Connacht and west Ulster during the evening.

Temperatures will vary between 16 and 20C on Tuesday.

Tonight will be cloudy with showery outbreaks of rain in the west of the country, but it will be drier elsewhere with temperatures dropping to below 11 and 14C.

Met Eireann forecasts that it will remain unsettled through the rest of this week with showers or longer spells of rain, with temperatures around normal.

Wednesday will once again see temperatures ranging from the high teens up to 20C, but after a dry start, the rain will prevail in most areas.

Scattered showers are expected to develop across the country through the morning and afternoon, with some showers turning heavy and thundery at times.

These showers will continue overnight on Wednesday, with temperatures of 11 to 14C.

This will mean there's a cloudy and wet start to the day on Thursday with continued outbreaks of rain.

The rain will clear to the east through the morning but it will be followed by scattered showers, some of them heavy, with highest temperatures of 15 to 19C.

Some clear spells will develop on Thursday night, bringing patches of mist or fog and lows of 10 to 13C.

Looking towards the weekend, the unsettled conditions will continue from Friday onwards when a cloudy day with heavy showers in the morning and afternoon and temperatures between 16 and 19C forecast.

Low pressure will remain near Ireland for the weekend, keeping conditions unsettled with showers turning heavy at times.

It looks like there won't be anything close to the sizzling temperatures of last month in August unfortunately, with changeable and unsettled weather expected throughout the month.

Met Eireann's 30-day forecast predicts that the best of the good is over for the summer as a higher than normal amount of rainfall and average temperatures likely across most weeks.
