Ireland weather: Met Eireann’s message to children amid 'uncertainty' over Christmas forecast

Met Eireann has issued its latest forecast for over Christmas, but admitted there is still “some uncertainty” about what may happen.

It comes after some weather models did a dramatic flip - swapping from predicting a cold snap for Christmas to showing much milder conditions on the big day.

In an update on Tuesday, Met Eireann said: “Low pressure will dominate our weather in the lead up to Christmas, bringing wet and breezy spells and turning milder for a time also.”

However, the national forecaster has reassured Children that no matter what conditions hit Ireland on Christmas Eve, they will not impact Santa making his way across the country.

“There remains some uncertainty in the forecast for Christmas weekend. Current indications suggest that more rain will spread across the country from the southwest on Friday night.

“However, with Rudolph's help, Santa will have no problem making his way through the rain.”

The current forecast shows a wet start for many on Christmas Eve with outbreaks of rain continuing through the day. The rain is due to clear north with drier spells developing and temperatures of 8C to 11C.

Christmas Day looks likely to be cloudy with spells of rain continuing for most and highest temperatures of 7C to 10C.

Looking ahead further, a forecaster said: “Remaining generally unsettled into the final week of 2021 with further spells of rain and some breezy days too.

“Temperatures turning slightly cooler again.”

It comes as a weather warning for rain has been issued for Cork, Kerry and Waterford, with Met Eireann warning of “hazardous” conditions.

The Status Yellow alert is in place from 2am Wednesday until 6am Thursday.

Met Eireann says up to 50mm of rain could fall in parts.

It’s alert reads: “Several bands of heavy rainfall will bring accumulations of 30-50mm, with higher totals likely in mountainous regions.

“This may lead to localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions.”
