Ireland weather: Met Eireann's horrid forecast with thunderstorms and hail to smash the country

The country is set to be soaked today as stormy conditions continue to batter Irish shores.

While a number of weather alerts issued yesterday are due to expire this morning Ireland is still set to be hit with blustery winds and endless rain right across the country for the next few days.

Met Eireann has warned that there will be a high risk of hail in some parts with some isolated thunderstorms also expected.

A status yellow wind warning in place for Connacht, Leinster and Munster expires at 7am today however a status yellow Gale warning remains in place into tomorrow.

There will be some sunshine arriving tomorrow morning however the grim conditions will continue later into the day and into the weekend.

A forecaster said: "Today will be cool and blustery with heavy showers becoming widespread though the morning but with sunny spells too. The showers will bring a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, and may turn wintry at times on high ground. Highest temperatures of just 5 to 8 degrees, in fresh and gusty westerly winds, strong to gale force near coasts.

"Frequent blustery showers will continue overnight, still with a risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms. Cold with lowest temperatures of just 1 to 4 degrees in fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong to near gale force on coasts but easing somewhat later in the night.

"Friday will be another day of heavy and blustery showers, with a continued risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms, and may turn wintry at times on high ground. There will be good sunny spells in the morning but becoming cloudier through the afternoon. Towards evening, squally showers will merge to longer spells of rain for a time.

"Saturday will see Blustery showers initially across the country with good sunny spells developing. The showers will gradually become mostly confined to the west and north. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in fresh and gusty westerly winds.

"Showers will ease overnight, continuing in the west and north with just isolated showers elsewhere. A chilly night with frost forming under long clear spells and lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees in moderating westerly winds.

"Sunday will be a mostly cloudy day with rain and drizzle moving in from the west during the morning, extending to all areas during the day, turning heavy at times in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh west to southwest winds.

"Rain will clear eastwards overnight, with scattered showers following in the northern half of the country and some patchy rain and drizzle lingering in places further south. Milder than recent nights with lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees, coldest in the north and warmest in the south, in moderate to fresh westerly winds."
