Ireland weather: Met Eireann's forecast for final days of 2021 as ominous fronts to bring changes

The weather for the rest of 2021 is set to be unsettled thanks to Atlantic fronts passing over Ireland in the days ahead.

Met Eireann has forecast wet but mild conditions until the end of next week with warnings not being ruled out.

From Monday until next Sunday, January 2, the national forecaster says that "the general trend for the end of 2021 and the first days of 2022 is for unsettled and mild conditions".

"Low pressure in the north Atlantic will be the dominant driver of our weather, steering frontal systems across the country at times through the week," Met Eireann predicts.

"This will lead to higher than normal rainfall totals across the country. However, this area of low pressure will also maintain a relatively mild air mass over Ireland through the period and as a result, temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than average.

"With the wetter conditions during this period, rainfall warnings cannot be ruled out."

Before then, St Stephen's Day will see patches of mist and drizzle will gradually clear in the morning.

"here will be a mix of bright spells and scattered showers during the day, with these most frequent over the northern half of the country. The best of the bright or sunny spells will be in southern areas where showers will be more isolated. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11C.

A forecaster said: "Showers will tend to die out overnight and it will become largely dry with patches of mist and fog forming. Some rain may also push onto southern coasts before dawn.

"A colder night than of late with lowest temperatures of 0 to 5C with a touch of frost in places.

"Some patches of fog may be slow to clear on Monday morning. Monday will be largely dry aside from a few coastal showers, and there is the chance of some light rain or drizzle at times in southern coastal areas.

"It will be quite cloudy overall, with limited bright spells. A chillier day with highest temperatures of 6 to 9C.

"Generally dry to start Monday night apart from a few showers in southern parts. However, a spell of rain will extend eastwards across the country later in the night and it will turn quite blustery. Minimum temperatures of 2 to 5C, coldest early in the night."

They added: "Outbreaks of rain will affect northern counties at times on Tuesday with a good deal of dry weather further south. Maximum temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in freshening southwest winds. However, by evening, a spell of rain will move in from the south, extending north over the country on Tuesday night. Minimum temperatures of 5 to 8C.

"Heavy rain and blustery winds on Wednesday morning. Rain will clear to bright spells and showers during the afternoon, the showers frequent in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15C in fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds.

"Clear spells and scattered showers on Wednesday night, the showers mainly affecting Atlantic coastal counties. Lows of 9 to 12C.

"On Thursday, a further spell of heavy rain is expected to spread across the country from the south, with further rain on Thursday night. Maximum temperatures of 12 to 15C in fresh south winds.

"Early indications suggest Friday will be a mild day with outbreaks of rain."
