Ireland weather: Met Eireann's eight-hour warning for 15 counties before stunning change arrives

Miserable weather will batter Ireland this weekend with a status yellow warning in place for the east of the country.

Forecasters are predicting heavy rain and high winds all day Saturday before some slightly improved conditions for Sunday.

From midday, Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan are all under status yellow rain and thunderstorm warning until 8pm tonight.

Experts are forecasting "scattered heavy showers with localised thundery downpours will give a risk of spot flooding".

The west won't go completely untouched however with scattered showers also hitting.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Mostly cloudy and misty at first, with outbreaks of rain in the east clearing northeastwards, lingering in the northeast until early afternoon. Scattered showers following from the west, many of them turning heavy today, with a risk of thundery downpours and localised flooding, especially in parts of Leinster and east Munster.

"A few hail showers may occur also. Maximum temperatures 17 to 20 degrees, with mostly light winds, southerly veering westerly."

And it looks like good weather is on the way next week as temperatures rise to "above normal", according to forecasters.

The mercury is likely to hit 24C midweek with sunshine expected to dominate.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry, with sunny spells on Monday. Quite warm, with maximum temperatures of 20 to 23 degrees generally, a little lower on coasts, with light variable breezes.

"Dry overnight with minimum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees, but patches of mist or fog may develop.

"Dry, with good sunshine (again on Tuesday) and mostly light easterly or variable breezes, moderate on exposed coasts, especially in the southeast and south. Warm, with maximum temperatures of 20 to 24 degrees, but a little cooler on eastern and southern coasts.

"Little change for the rest of the week. Continuing dry, with sunny intervals by day and light to moderate winds, northeasterly or variable in direction. Daytime temperatures will still be a little above normal, with maximum values of 20 to 23 or 24 degrees, but a little lower on exposed coasts. Misty in places at night, with fog patches."
