Ireland weather tomorrow: Met Eireann's bleak 24-hour forecast in awful week

Ireland is in the throes of a spell of weather that's both cold and wet – in other words, we're certainly suffering weather-wise at the moment.

And it seems things aren't likely to improve much any time soon, with a 24-hour forecast from Met Eireann that forecasts heavy rain tonight and Friday.

The national forecaster has predicted a period of heavy rainfall tonight – and even raised the possibility of localised flooding in some parts of the country.

A Met Eireann spokesperson warned that "cloud will build from the west through the afternoon with rain pushing into Atlantic counties by evening."

Tonight, Met Eireann says we could be in for heavy rainfall, especially in western counties, with "localised flooding possible".

Temperatures will also plummet later on, with the needle set to slide right down towards freezing overnight.

We'll have some degree of let-up tomorrow, with easterly rain clearing into the Irish Sea.

But it will remain cloudy, and Met Eireann is predicting patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle in parts of the country.

Today's forecast comes after no fewer than 16 counties were issued with Status Yellow wind warnings on Wednesday.

Met Eireann issued five separate warnings yesterday, before gusts hit many parts of the country yesterday afternoon and evening.

Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo were among the counties that faced down the barrel of 110km/h winds yesterday after the warning.

The rest of this week will be unsettled, with a lot of rain set to fall and temperatures likely to cool at the weekend.

We're going to see colder temperatures in the coming weeks, with frost imminent as thermometers move towards the zero mark.

Met Eireann's forecast says the "unsettled picture continues into the early days of next week with rain at times".
