Ireland weather: Met Eireann predicts heavy rain, flooding, hail and thunderstorms in rotten weekend forecast

Ireland can expect heavy rain, flooding and even thunderstorms over the weekend after another miserable few days of weather.

Rotten conditions don't seem to be going away for very long, with the public being given some respite with sunny spells on Saturday morning and afternoon.

But wet and windy conditions will be back with a bang in the evening as a band of rain with "heavy bursts" moves across the country.

Sunday will then see prolonged downpours, leading to spot flooding before some thunderstorms arrrive.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Many areas seeing a dry and sunny start to Saturday morning.

"Scattered showers in parts of the north and west during the morning will extend to other parts of the country through the afternoon and evening but there will be sunny spells in between.

"Another cool day with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees, in a light to moderate west to northwest breeze.

"Early tonight, showers will become largely confined to eastern areas as cloud builds in from the Atlantic.

"A band of showery rain will move eastwards across the country overnight and there will be some heavy bursts, especially in the west, giving a risk of localised flooding. Breezier conditions will arrive with the rain as fresh and gusty southerly winds develop. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees.

"The band of showery rain will continue to track eastwards on Sunday morning, with some heavy bursts in the south and southeast in particular, giving a risk of spot flooding.

"The rain will clear the east early in the afternoon and will be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers.

"Many showers will be heavy and there will be a risk of thunderstorms and hail. Fresh and gusty southerly winds will veer southwesterly and moderate with the passage of the rain, but will stay fresh along the south coast. Staying cool with maximum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees."

Despite Monday seeing some heavy showers, especially in the north and west, conditions look like improving early next week.

Mild conditions with sunny spells are expect to arrive on Tuesday and Wednesday, with just the occasional scattered shower to worry about.
