Ireland weather: Met Eireann predicts grim few days ahead with thunder and snow before positive change

Ireland is set to continue to be soaked this week as heavy rain and winds are set to batter the country.

While temperatures are slowly creeping up the country will be plagued by some miserable, wet weather this week before any major change comes on the weekend.

A Status Yellow Wind alert in place for Donegal, Galway and Mayo comes to an end this morning.

But Met Eireann has warned that we should expect some very stormy and wintry conditions, as well as some snow, hitting parts of the country.

A forecaster said: " Bright and breezy today, Wednesday, with sunny spells and scattered showers. Cloud will thicken from the south this afternoon and outbreaks of rain will push in over southern counties towards evening. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with fresh and gusty south to southwest winds.

"Heavy rain will move up from the south tonight, bringing a risk of spot flooding. The rain will turn to sleet, mainly over the western parts of the country overnight, falling as snow about high ground.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees. Southerly winds veering westerly will increase strong to near gale and gusty in eastern counties overnight, with gales developing along southern and Irish Sea Coasts.

"Scattered showers, with hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms will feed into western counties towards dawn."

And unfortunately the horrid conditions are set to continue over the next number of days with more rain, however there is some positive news on the horizon.

Weather chiefs have said that temperatures will continue to pick up this week and we may even get a nice dose of sunshine this weekend.

A forecaster added: "Rain, and any sleet and snow will clear northeastwards, become confined to Ulster tomorrow morning, with sunny spells and blustery showers elsewhere. Some of those showers will be heavy with hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms, but they will die out over much of the country as the afternoon goes on.

"Feeling cooler than recent days, with top temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, with fresh to strong and gusty west to southwest winds easing moderate to fresh later.

"It will be mild, wet and windy to begin on Friday, with widespread rain and fresh to strong and gusty south to southeast winds.

"Brighter more showery conditions will extend from the west during the morning with winds veering southwest and slowly moderating. It will stay cloudy in southern counties, however, where the rain may persist for much of the day maintaining the flood risk. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

"Showers or longer spells of rain look set to feed up over the country from the south on Saturday morning, accompanied by increasingly blustery southerly winds. However, conditions look likely to improve during the afternoon with drier and brighter intervals developing.

"Sunday is currently signalled to be dry with some sunshine across the bulk of the country. However, cloudy conditions with patchy rain and drizzle may affect southeastern counties in the morning, and there is a chance that scattered showers may develop over the western half of the country during the afternoon. Highs of 7 to 10 degrees."
