Ireland weather: Met Eireann pinpoint exact time that forecast will change as thundery showers set to strike 17 counties

That strange yellow thing in the sky which had Ireland sweating over the last week is set to disappear today, with Met Eireann issuing a thunderstorm advisory for 17 counties as temperatures drop.

Ireland was bathed in glorious, if stifling, sunshine for the last couple of weeks, with highs of 29C reached in some areas of the country.

However, on the day that indoor dining returns, many will be desperate to get a seat indoors, otherwise they'll be soaked.

Here's the latest from the national forecaster.

Thunder advisory

"Downpours will result in hazardous driving conditions and may lead to spot flooding The areas most at risk are Leinster and East Munster on later Monday afternoon and evening. Heavy showers with the risk of thunderstorms will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday."

Monday

"Some bright or sunny spells in eastern counties today but cloud will thicken from the west during the day. Showery outbreaks of rain will develop across the western half of the country during the morning, extending eastwards during the afternoon and reaching eastern and northeastern counties in the evening.

"There will be heavy or thundery downpours at times which may lead to spot flooding in places. Less warm than recent days with highs of 18 to 23 degrees generally in moderate northwest breezes."

The rain is coming, as can be seen in Met Eireann's latest forecast (Met Eireann)

Monday evening:

"Further showers and localised thunderstorms overnight with a continued risk of spot flooding. Minimum temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in moderate northwest winds."

Tuesday

"Showery rain will linger across northern and eastern counties on Tuesday with a mix of bright spells and scattered showers elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees in moderate northwest winds."
