Ireland weather: Met Eireann pinpoint exact day when temperatures plummet as it warns of 'treacherous conditions'

The country is waking up to an icy morning today as temperatures are set to plummet to far below freezing this week.

It's been a cold couple of days however things will likely get even colder in the next couple of days with icy patches and frost set to hit the country.

And Met Eireann has warned that temperatures will hit as low as minus 7C before things pick up slightly on the weekend.

The National forecaster has said today will be a cold and icy start this morning as the country is hit with icy patches of snow which will lead to some dangerous conditions

A forecaster said there will be light sleet and snow which will spread southwards during the morning with slight accumulations of snow combined with ice leading to "treacherous conditions on untreated surfaces".

They added: "Very cold again tonight with widespread frost and ice. Many areas will be dry and clear but there will be a few wintry showers in the north and a few hail or snow showers may drift in to affect some Irish Sea coastal districts.

"Minimum of -4 to -1 degrees in moderate northerly breezes.

"Widespread frost and ice to start on Friday with temperatures struggling to reach afternoon highs of just 0 to 3 degrees.

"There'll be some sunny spells but a few wintry showers will affect north Connacht, Ulster and possibly coastal parts of Leinster. A severe frost setting in quickly after dark on Friday evening.

Friday night will bring "widespread severe frost with icy stretches on Friday night. It'll be predominantly dry with clear skies and just a few patches of freezing fog.

"Minimum temperatures of -7 to -3 degrees in mostly light, variable winds."

"Frost and ice slowly clearing on Saturday to leave a mostly dry day with sunny spells. However, it'll be cloudier in the northwest with the chance of a little patchy rain there. After an extremely cold start maximum afternoon temperatures will range 2 to 5 degrees.

"Some patches of light rain or drizzle in the west and north on Saturday night but dry in most areas with some clear spells. Minimum temperatures -2 to +4 degrees, coldest in the south with another fairly widespread frost away from Atlantic coastal areas."
