Ireland weather: Met Éireann pinpoint days for grim weather u-turn as hopes for heatwave fade

Met Éireann has predicted rain every day this week, including the weekend, in a u-turn from the largely dry forecast earlier in the week.

Thousands of Irish people had been hoping for BBQ weather this weekend and while there will be long dry and sunny periods, Met Éireann is warning of drizzle and rain at times.

The weather has been largely dry for the last seven days but more rain is creeping into the forecast with the weekend possibly more cloudy and wet than first thought.

In its outlook, Met Éireann said that "while high pressure will continue to be the main influence over our weather bringing broadly benign conditions in the outlook period, its dominance will wax and wane so occasional rain or showers will occur at times."

However, they did say that "precipitation amounts will be relatively low and temperatures look likely to trend mostly near to slightly above average for the time of year."

So the proverbial mixed bag in weather actually starts today [Thursday] as forecasters expects some showers to occur. They said: "Patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the west will gradually move across the country through the afternoon and evening, although many areas will remain dry.

"It will later brighten from the west as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees, warmest in Leinster and Munster, in mainly light west to southwest breezes."

It will remain mostly dry overnight but yet again "isolated showers" could interrupt an otherwise sunny and clear day on Friday.

"Isolated light showers may linger in the west early on [Friday], although these will generally clear by midday. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees in very light northwesterly breezes."

Things take a grim turn on Saturday with Met Eireann predicting it will be "often cloudy and damp with patchy rain and drizzle and mist patches too." Temperature, however, could still reach 18 degrees in parts.

The patchy rain and drizzle will continue on Saturday night and into Sunday especially in the west and northwest but these will "break up into sunny spells and showers during the afternoon and evening," according to the latest forecast.

"Top temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees generally but a little cooler in the northwest in light northerly or variable breezes."

"Scattered showers look likely to continue through Sunday night but there will be some dry and clear intervals too. Light northwest or variable breezes. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees," Met Éireann continued.

Beyond that, early next week looks to be sunnier and drier with warms spells. In their forecast for Monday, Met Éireann said: "Sunny spells and showers, clearing most places in the evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in light to moderate northwest breezes."

Meanwhile, Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said: "The weather models led us up the garden path it seems. Weekend looking mild but very cloud with patchy rain at times now. High pressure just losing its grip for a few days before improving again next week."

"While we will see some light rain in the West and possible some patchy rain over the weekend the amounts look low and high pressure will be the main influence next week. Temperatures will be rising a little also."
