Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues warning to 16 counties as awful conditions hit

Ireland is battening down the hatches today, with no fewer than 16 counties facing Status Yellow wind warnings for today and tomorrow.

Met Eireann is forecasting strong winds and even flooding in a slew of counties across Ireland, with warnings also issued to two counties in the North.

The national forecaster has issued five separate warnings this morning, with gusts set to hit many parts of the country this afternoon and evening.

Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick could face winds of up to 110km/h, with a warning in place from this afternoon until tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Leitrim and Sligo will be hit with strong winds and hight tides tonight, and Met Eireann has put a warning in place from 9pm tonight.

Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Meath have been dealt the same hand ahead of the weekend, with northwest winds reaching a mean speed of 50 to 65km/h.

And Donegal completes the 16 counties facing heavy winds today, with a Status Yellow in place from tonight until the early hours of Thursday morning.

Met Eireann issues yellow warnings in cases where weather conditions could cause localised danger, though it's not an uncommon occurrence.

Aside from the Status Yellow warnings, the coming days will see temperatures across Ireland dip close to the zero-degree mark.

A spokesperson for Met Eireann said today will consist of "sunny spells and scattered heavy showers", adding that there is a risk of coastal flooding along the Atlantic coasts.

Tonight will bring frequent showers, with lowest temperatures of between 3 and 5 degrees, as well as continuing winds and the ongoing threat of coastal flooding looming large over several parts of the country. Winds will ease as the night wears on, the spokesperson said.

Tomorrow, though, will dawn dry and bright, with spells of hazy sunshine, according to Met Eireann.
