Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues rainfall alert for 14 counties and warns of thunder and flooding

Fourteen counties have been hit with a rainfall warning as the southern half of Ireland is to be washed out on Monday.

Met Eireann has issued the alert and warned there could be thunderstorms overnight as rain begins to bucket down.

The caution will be in place for all of Munster, as well as Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly and Galway.

The warning will kick in at 2am and will remain in place until 11.59pm on Monday.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall in some of these areas during the 22-hour period.

A Met Eireann spokesman warned: "Heavy, possibly thundery, rain at times overnight and during Monday with accumulations of 25 to 40mm in places. Localised flooding may occur."
