Cyclonic winds and horrendous rain showers battered the country after Met Eireann issued a grim forecast for the week.
A number of weather warnings were in place throughout Thursday as the country braced for dangerous winds and storm like rain showers.
While this trend is set to continue throughout today with heavy rain hitting parts of the country from early in the morning and into the evening there are some positive signs that change is on the way.
Met Eireann has forecast a lot more sunshine for the weekend with temperatures set to climb.
And weather experts have said there are 'tentative signs' that conditions will be more settled into next week however there will still be some scattered showers.
A forecaster said "Cloudy today with showery outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, especially across Munster and Leinster. However, it will gradually brighten up from the north through the afternoon and evening, with drier conditions extending southwards.
"Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees Celsius, in mostly moderate or fresh north to northwest winds, stronger in some coastal parts.
"Scattered showers will become isolated tonight and mainly confined to western and northern coasts. Long clear spells will develop allowing temperatures to dip to between 1 to 5 degrees Celsius in moderating northwest breezes.
"A dry and sunny start for much of the country in the morning with scattered showers mainly affected the west and northwest. The showers will spread more countrywide through the day, interspersed with some sunny spells. Another relatively cool day with highs of just 10 to 13 degrees Celsius, in mostly moderate westerly breezes.
"Cool and unsettled into early next week, but with tentative signs of settled weather from midweek.
"A band of rain will sweep in across the country during the morning on Sunday, clearing into the Irish Sea into the afternoon. Whilst it will brighten up, scattered heavy showers will follow bringing the risk of spot flooding, lightning and hail. Staying cool with highs of only 10 to 13 degrees Celsius. Breezy at first in fresh southerly winds, veering westerly and moderating.
"Scattered showers continuing overnight with some clear spells on Sunday night. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds veering northwesterly.
"Another mixed day of sunny spells and scattered shower, some heavy through the afternoon on Monday. Highs of 11 to 13 degrees in moderate north to northwest winds. Mainly dry overnight with showers becoming confined to western and northern shores. Lows of 4 to 7 degrees in light breezes.
"Tuesday will bring sunny spells and scattered showers, although the showers will be lighter than previous days, Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees Celsius in moderate, occasionally fresh northwest breezes. Dry overnight with long clear spell and lows of 4 to 7 degrees in light northwest breezes.
"Current indications are for a lot of dry weather on Wednesday although there will be a lot of cloud around with a few light showers across Ulster and north Leinster. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in light northwest breezes."
