Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues horrible weather update as conditions to get much worse

Flooding could hammer parts of the country as Ireland gets drenched by heavy rain, the national forecaster has said.

Met Eireann issued a yellow rainfall alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, with Galway, Mayo, Cork and Kerry all baring the brunt of miserable conditions.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall in parts, with localised flooding set to hit in another blow to the south and west.

The weather warnings take effect from 6pm this evening until 12pm on Wednesday afternoon.

But even though the caution is only in place for four counties, the entire country will see widespread heavy rain from Tuesday night.

A forecaster said: "Mostly cloudy at first today with lingering drizzle and mist. However, brighter conditions in the southwest will extend to most areas by the early afternoon.

"Cloud will thicken from the west later as southerly winds freshen, with rain arriving in Connacht and west Munster towards evening. Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C.

"Rain will spread countrywide tonight, with some heavy falls, bringing a risk of localised spot flooding. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C, with strong southerly winds developing.

"Tomorrow, Wednesday will be a wet and windy day with a continued risk of localised spot flooding.

"Strong and gusty southerly winds will veer westerly as conditions improve from the west later in the day. Highest temperatures of 11C and 13C.

"The rain will clear eastwards on Wednesday night and under clear skies temperatures will drop significantly in a much cooler airmass than recent days, down to between 3C and 5C."

And Met Eireann has said this horrible period of bad weather is set to continue until at least the weekend.

"A mobile Atlantic regime will continue to dominate bringing unsettled conditions right out to the weekend," the forecaster said.
