Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues highly rare weather alert with update on how long heatwave will last

Met Eireann has issued a high temperature weather advisory with the stunning heatwave set to stick around until next weekend.

Forecasters are predicting another day of near 29C heat on Sunday with temperatures surpassing 25C each day right up until Friday.

Weather chiefs are warning that the sweltering conditions won't be ending anytime soon either, the weather advisory reads: "Continuing very warm until Friday, with day time temperatures into the high twenties and very humid at night with temperatures staying in the mid to high teens."

Some parts of the country could even see 30C today with inland spots predicted to be warmest.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Any early mist or fog patches will soon clear. It will become very warm today with long spells of sunshine across most of the country. However, in coastal areas of north Ulster it will be somewhat cloudier with patches of mist.

"Maximum temperatures generally ranging 24 to 29 degrees but slightly less warm along the coast due to sea-breezes. There is a small chance of a few localised heavy showers breaking out during the evening."

And it's going to be the exact same on Monday, the forecaster added: "Another very warm day on Monday with plenty of sunshine albeit cloudier at times along the north coast. An isolated shower may break out in Connacht during the afternoon.

"Maximum temperatures generally ranging 24 to 28 degrees but slightly less warm in northern and eastern coastal areas with moderate onshore east to northeast breezes."

Athenry was pinpointed as the area where the highest temperature was recorded but other areas in the midlands also hit highs of 29C.

A forecaster said: "We have reached 29.3C so far today at Athenry, Co. Galway, making it the warmest day of the year so far.

"Beautiful sunshine around much of the country too."
