Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue update on Sudden Stratospheric Warming event as snow forecast in the UK

Met Éireann has provided an update on the Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) that is "ongoing" as snow has been forecast for the UK.

While the UK Met Office has predicted "an increasing chance of it turning more unsettled, possibly bringing snow" next week from Saturday March 3 to Monday March 13, Irish people have been left wondering if an Arctic blast might reach our shores.

Ireland's long-range weather forecast currently shows no indication of snow and it is set to be a dry and settled week with high pressure dominant.

However, the national forecaster warned that give the ongoing SSW event, it adds a "high degree of uncertainty" to the forecast.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) is on-going, which adds a high degree of uncertainty to the overall forecast. Given that caveat, the overall signal from the seasonal models for Ireland during spring (March, April, May), is for slightly above average temperatures with average rainfall. March, and possibly the beginning of April, are likely to be cooler and drier than average, with a transition to warmer and wetter conditions for May."

Here is Met Éireann's forecast for the rest of the week:

Tuesday, February 28

Quite cloudy today with just occasional sunny intervals. Isolated showers will affect the south and east of the country at times, but otherwise it will be generally dry. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in light northeasterly breezes.

Staying generally dry tonight with just a slight chance of showers in the east and southeast. Early cloud will gradually give way to some clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +4 degrees, coolest in the west with some frost possible. Northeasterly breezes, light in strength.

Wednesday, March 1

Another mostly dry day with patchy light rain or drizzle possible in the east and southeast. Largely cloudy with the best of any bright spells in western areas early in the day. Maximum temperatures of around 7 or 8 degrees in light to moderate east to northeast breezes.

Mostly cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle in southern and eastern coastal areas on Wednesday night, otherwise dry with limited clear breaks. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in light east to northeast breezes.

Thursday, March 2

Mostly cloudy with scattered patches of light rain and drizzle, clearing most parts in the evening. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in light easterly or variable breezes.

Many areas will be dry with a mix of cloud and clear spells on Thursday night, and just the odd patch of drizzle. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees. Winds will remain light and variable.

Friday, March 3

Partly cloudy with some brighter spells. Occasional drizzle. Highs of 7 to 9 degrees in near calm conditions.

Saturday, March 4
