Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue TWO urgent warnings for 26 counties as Storm Bella hits

Met Eireann have issued two Status Yellow rain, flood and wind warnings as Storm Bella is set to batter Ireland.

The first wind alert is in place for the whole country from 3pm on Saturday until 4am on Sunday.

It reads: "On Saturday (St Stephen's Day), through the late afternoon, evening and night, westerly winds associated with Storm Bella (named by UK Met Office) will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h. Gusts will be higher at times near the west coast.

"With the combination of strong winds, high waves and forecasted storm surge, there is a risk of coastal flooding along the west coast."

While the second warning is also in place for all 26 counties, with "heavy rain" likely to bring some flooding in places.

It reads: "On Saturday (St Stephen’s Day), through the late afternoon, evening and night, heavy rain associated with Storm Bella (named by the UK Met Office) will move southwards over Ireland and may cause localised flooding in some areas."

Meanwhile conditions are set to turn colder next week with hail and even wintry showers possible on higher ground.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cold and windy on Monday with widespread showers, possibly wintry on high ground with a risk of hail. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees but feeling much colder owing to the added wind-chill factor in strong and gusty northwest winds.

"Staying cold and blustery overnight with a mix of clear spells and scattered showers. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in fresh northwest winds.

"Another cold and blustery day is forecast for Tuesday with a mix of bright spells and showers, some possibly wintry but generally of rain or hail. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in fresh northwest winds.

"Showers becoming confines to coastal area overnight with clear spells elsewhere and frost patches. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in moderate to fresh northerly winds."
