Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue snow update as videos show White Christmas with changes to come on St. Stephen's Day

Met Eireann confirmed that snow hit parts of the country on Tuesday night as videos and pictures show a White Christmas across Ireland.

A mix of snow and sleet hit higher ground last night during a weather warning as temperatures dropped to below freezing.

The national forecaster had also issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, which stayed in place until 9am this morning.

Today Met Eireann forecast it will be wet and windy this morning over Munster and Leinster.

It will become largely dry and clear tonight with just isolated showers in Connacht and Ulster.

Frost and some icy stretches will form as temperatures fall to between 0 and 3 degrees.

Christmas Eve will be a largely dry and bright day, with isolated showers.

It will be mainly dry and quite settled weather initially but a change to very unsettled conditions from St. Stephen's Day as it turns very wet and windy.

Thursday/Christmas Eve night will be a very cold night.

It will be coldest in Leinster with the clearest conditions and a sharp frost developing..

Friday/Christmas Day will have a dry start, but after that cloudy for much of the day with some sunshine.

Outbreaks of rain will develop towards the evening.


Friday/Christmas Night will becoming windy overnight with freshening west to southwest winds developing and becoming gusty.


Saturday is set to be a very windy day with strong and gusty southwesterly winds with gales or strong gales developing on Atlantic coasts.


Saturday night: Wet and windy to begin but the rain will slowly clear southwards followed by blustery showers with Lowest temperatures of -1.

Sunday is forecast to be a chilly day with highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees, again coldest in the north.

Early next week will remain very unsettled with rain and showers.

It will be cold too, with some frosty nights.
