Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue ominous Bank Holiday warning as miserable conditions forecast

The Bank Holiday weekend looks set to be a washout thanks to brutal conditions arriving in Ireland from the Atlantic.

Two counties in particular are set to be hit by torrential rain after Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow warning.

The rain warning is in place for Cork and Kerry from midnight on Saturday until midnight on Sunday.

A spell of heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and evening may lead to localised flooding, the forecaster said.

As for the rest of the country, the weather over the long weekend is likely to bring similar conditions.

Friday night will be mainly dry, apart from outbreaks of rain developing in west Connacht and west Ulster towards dawn.

Southerly winds will freshen overnight, becoming strong on Atlantic coasts., with lowest temperatures of 6C to 10C.

A forecaster continued: "Saturday morning will be dry in many areas. However, rain will develop in western coastal counties.

"Through the afternoon and early evening, rain will spread eastwards to all areas. It will be heavy at times, especially in southern coastal counties with a risk of localised flooding. Mild and quite windy with highest temperatures of 12C to 15C.

"A wet start on Saturday night with outbreaks of rain. There will be further heavy falls in places with a risk of some localised flooding.

"Rain will clear eastwards into the Irish Sea later in the night with scattered showers following from the west. A mild night with lowest temperatures of 9C to 12C.

"Bright spells and showers on Sunday. The showers will be frequent across the west and north of the country with some heavy downpours possible. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C.

"On Sunday night, showers will become largely confined to Atlantic coastal counties with good clear spells developing elsewhere. A cooler night with lowest temperatures of 6C to 9C."

As for the Bank Holiday, the forecaster said: "Monday looks set to be a fresh day with sunny spells and scattered showers. The best of the sunshine across the east and south of the country with the showers most frequent in the west and north. Maximum temperatures ranging 10C to 13C.

"Early on Monday night, rain will develop in the southwest, extending nationwide overnight. Lowest temperatures of around 7C to 10C."

The outlook for the week ahead looks unsettled so far, with more scattered rain and even mist or fog on the cards for Tuesday.
