Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue grim update to forecast as 23 counties at risk of brutal hailstorms on wicked weekend

If you were hoping for a nice calm day of weather for Friday then you're in luck - as long as you live in the south east.

That's because Met Eireann's latest weather forecast has put 23 counties at risk of a wicked weekend of thunderstorms, hail and flooding.

The rain absolutely pelted down yesterday across the island and it seems like that's not going to go away any time soon.

Though there are hopes of an 'African plume' later in the month, for now we're going to have to tough it out through the showers.

Here's the latest weather forecast for Ireland from the Met Eireann boffins.

Friday

"Thundery outbreaks of rain will occur today, bringing hazardous driving conditions and the ongoing risk of spot flooding. The best of the drier spells will be across the south and southeast early on.

" Highest temperatures will range 15 to 19 degrees Celsius, mildest away from Atlantic counties. Blustery across the southern half of Ireland, in a fresh westerly wind; elsewhere westerly breezes will be just light to moderate in strength."

Friday night

"Outbreaks of thundery rain will persist overnight, heaviest and most frequent across Atlantic counties. Some drier spells too, especially across the midlands and east, but with possible mist. Relatively mild with lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius. Westerly winds be strong along Atlantic coasts, and somewhat lighter elsewhere."

Saturday

"Blustery outbreaks of rain will occur on Saturday, merging into longer spells of rain in places, with further spot flooding, and possible thunderstorms. Some bright or sunny spells too, with driest conditions likely across southern counties. Highest temperatures will range 16 to 19 degrees Celsius, mildest across the northeast. West to northwest breezes wil be mostly moderate to fresh in strength"

Saturday night

"Showers will become mostly confined to Ulster and Atlantic coastal counties overnight with lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in moderating westerly winds."

Weather warning for Connacht, Ulster, north Leinster and north Munster (09:00 Friday 06/08/2021 to 09:00 Saturday 07/08/2021)

"Thunderstorm activity with the risk of hail, coupled with longer spells of rain over Kerry, Limerick, Clare and Tipperary, will lead to localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions."
