Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues fresh 20-hour warning as wintry conditions to hit

Met Eireann has issued a fresh 20-hour weather warning for seven counties as wintry conditions get set to hit.

A Status Yellow alert is now in place for Wicklow, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford starting at 4pm today until noon tomorrow.

It reads: "This evening, overnight and Wednesday morning spells of heavy rain moving eastwards over Ireland will give 25 to 40 mm of rain and a risk of localised flooding. Highest amounts in the southwest of the country and in mountainous areas."

The miserable wet conditions are set to move in from the Atlantic later on, before the heavy showers hit tonight and tomorrow.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Any mist and fog patches soon clearing to give a bright start today, with sunny spells. A few scattered showers will continue, mainly in western and northwestern coastal areas. Cloud will increase from the west during the day, with rain extending from the Atlantic during the afternoon and evening. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will become strong and gusty near Atlantic coasts by evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees.

"Wet and windy overnight. Rain in the west and southwest will turn heavy and persistent, and will extend countrywide overnight, with potential for spot flooding. A clearance to showers move into the west by dawn. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees. Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds, strong to near gale on the coasts, will veer westerly.

"A wet and blustery start tomorrow across the midlands and east, with heavy rain for a time and a continued risk of spot flooding.

"Brighter, sunnier conditions with scattered showers in the west will gradually extend to all areas through the day. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees. Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds in the east, strong to near gale at the coasts at first, will veer westerly during the morning and gradually moderate."

And there will be more showers for the rest of the week, with some turning thundery on Thursday.

A forecaster added: "Widespread showers for a time on Thursday, some of the showers heavy and possibly thundery with hail. Sunny spells will occur also. Light southerly breezes veering westerly. Cool, with highest temperatures of just 10 to 12 degrees.

"Another cool day with a mix of bright spells and scattered showers, with the showers most frequent in the east of the country. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, in moderate to fresh northerly winds.

"Current indications suggest that it will remain cool and unsettled for the weekend with showers or longer spells of rain, turning heavy at times. There is also the potential for strong winds on Sunday, particularly in the west and northwest."
