Ireland weather: Met Eireann issue advisory ahead of 'thunderstorms and lightning'

Met Eireann have issued a weather advisory for Monday as thunderstorms and lightning are set to hit parts of the country.

The national forecaster said:"Thunderstorm/lightning activity will develop on Monday especially in parts of the midlands, west and north."

Forecasters added that weather warnings will follow shortly.

The weather advisory for Ireland is valid from 6am on Monday until 11pm that night.

A Status Yellow thunder warning is currently in place until 11pm tonight for Munster, Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, and Westmeath.

A forecaster cautioned: "Thunderstorms will develop today with torrential downpours in some areas bringing a risk of hail and localised flooding."

The UK Met Office have also issued a warning for parts of Northern Ireland.

Counties Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry are all affected.

The UK's Met Office warning for those counties reads: "Thunderstorms expected to form over parts of Northern Ireland this afternoon."

That warning is valid from 1pm until 9pm.
