Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts unusual change with strange mix of conditions expected

We are half way through the week and the country has already seen a very strange mix of weather.

Sunshine and a mix of heavy rain showers and even hail have been common features throughout the week following a spate of warm weather in the previous weeks.

And now it looks as though that trend is set to stay for the rest of the week with Met Eireann forecasting a very unsettled few days ahead.

While temperatures will start to climb again throughout the week and into the weekend, heavy rain showers are also set to continue particularly in the west.

And temperatures will dip throughout the nights sometimes hitting below zero degrees.

A forecaster said: "Today will be cool with sunny spells. Showers of rain or hail in Ulster, Connacht and west Munster early this morning will extend to all areas by early afternoon and will continue for the rest of the day, some heavy with a risk of isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees with light to moderate north to northwest winds.

"Cool on Thursday and Friday with sunshine and showers and with frost at night. Milder over the weekend with rain on Saturday and showers on Sunday.

"Thursday night will be mainly dry with clear spells and a few showers on northern coasts. It will be cold with frost developing. Lowest temperatures of -2 and +2 degrees.

"Friday will continue cool. There'll be some showers in Ulster, but many areas will be mainly dry with sunny spells. Cloud will increase in Munster in the evening.

"Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with mostly variable breezes. On Friday night, rain will develop in the southwest and will spread northeastwards over Munster, Connacht and south Leinster overnight along with fresh southeasterly winds. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.

The weekend looks even more unsettled with the west and south set to see some heavy showers. And it looks as though this will continue into next week.

They added: "On Saturday morning, rain will continue to spread northeastwards and will be heavy at times. It will clear to the northeast through the afternoon with showers following.

"Fresh southeast winds will veer southerly as the rain clears. It will become milder with highest temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees, mildest over the southern half of the country. On Saturday night, some heavy showers will spread over Munster and Connacht.

"On Sunday, there'll be some bright or sunny spells. However, showers will become widespread and heavy. It will be mild with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with fresh southerly winds.

"Early next week will continue mild with further showers."
