Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts more thunderstorms and 'heavy' rain before major temperature swing

Met Eireann has forecast more thunderstorms and 'heavy' rain today ahead of a major temperature swing this weekend.

In its forecast for Wednesday, Met Eireann said: "Sunny spells and scattered showers will develop, initially in the west and north and becoming more widespread this afternoon, some heavy with a few thunderstorms possible. This evening, showers will become confined to Munster and Leinster."

Meanwhile, it is set to get very warm on Saturday with temperatures reaching 25C before it drops to the teens on Sunday.

The national forecaster said it would be "warm and humid" on Friday and Saturday with spells of rain, while Sunday will be a "cooler, fresher day" with sunshine and showers.

Here is an overview of the weather for the week ahead:

Wednesday, June 21

Today, sunny spells and scattered showers will develop, initially in the west and north and becoming more widespread this afternoon, some heavy with a few thunderstorms possible. This evening, showers will become confined to Munster and Leinster. Highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees with mostly light westerly breezes.

Tonight will be mainly dry with clear spells and a few isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees with light, variable breezes.

Thursday, June 22

Sunny spells on Thursday with a good deal of dry weather and some well scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 19 to 23 degrees with mostly light southerly breezes.

On Thursday night rain will develop in the west and spread eastwards to all areas overnight. It will be very mild with temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees and moderate to fresh southerly winds.

Friday, June 23

Friday will be mostly cloudy with spells of rain through the day, possibly heavy at times. Some brighter intervals will develop also. Highest temperatures of 19 to 23 degrees with mostly moderate southerly winds. Friday night will be very mild with further spells of rain and temperatures of 15 to 17 degrees.

Saturday, June 24

Saturday will be warm with spells of rain or showers, heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees with moderate to fresh southerly winds.

Sunday, June 25

Sunday will be a cooler, fresher day with sunshine and showers. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly breezes.

The early days of next week will continue unsettled with rain or showers at times.
