Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts heatwave temperatures but still warns of more thunderstorms

Ireland is set to experience two of its warmest days of the year - but there are still going to be heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Met Eireann is forecasting highs of 24C on Friday and it will be hotter again on Saturday as parts of the country will feel heatwave temperatures.

A spokesman said: "A cloudy, misty start today, Friday. There'll be heavy showers likely through the day across the southern half of the country with a risk of thunderstorms.

"The northern half of the country will become drier and brighter with sunny spells developing.

"The highest temperatures will be in the north too, up to 26 degrees likely there, with temperatures across the country generally between 21 and 24 degrees with high relative humidity. Winds will be light east or northeast."

It will be a warm summer night for some areas as lows won't dip below 16C.

However, parts of Munster are still in for longer periods of rain.

The spokesman added: "Overnight temperatures no lower than 12 to 16 degrees once again with showers or longer spells of rain continuing through Munster, the rest of the country will be mostly dry but there is an ongoing risk of passing showers throughout the forecast period."

Temperatures will stay on the "high side" again on Saturday.

But Munster, Leinster and Connacht will experience rainfall at different stages of the day.

"Tomorrow, Saturday, will see showers or longer spells of rain affecting Munster and southern parts of Connacht at first and later in to Leinster.

"There'll be drier weather for Ulster and north Connacht with sunshine there.

"Temperatures staying on the high side, between 21 and 25 degrees, once again the best in Ulster. Winds remain light variable or easterly in direction."
