Ireland is set for a grim couple of days ahead with more rain on the way.

However weather chiefs have said that significant change is just around the corner with a settled and dry weekend ahead.

Today will be cloudy at first however things are set to brighten up through the morning to give a fresh and bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Sadly Met Eireann have warned that the wet and rainy weather will persist throughout today and tomorrow.

A forecaster said: "More prolonged showers will move in across northwestern areas in the evening. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees.

"A band of heavy showers will push southeastwards across the country overnight with further scattered showers following in behind. Persistent rain will develop in the west towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in moderate southwesterly winds, which will freshening around the showers."

And that wet weather is going to continue right into Friday with weather chiefs predicting that "outbreaks of rain will spreads eastwards through the morning but will clear into the Irish Sea by the afternoon. Brighter conditions will followed in from the west. Scattered showers will become confined to northern and western areas by the evening."

The forecast for Sunday (Met Eireann)

However the weekend will bring about major change with dry weather and sunny spells set to arrive and stay right into next week.

A forecaster added Saturday will be "a largely dry and bright day with scattered light showers. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in a light to moderate northwest breeze. Largely clear and dry on Saturday night with lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

"Sunday will be another largely dry day. A bright start will give way to a cloudier afternoon. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in a light northwesterly or variable breeze Cloud will thicken from the Atlantic in the evening with outbreaks of rain sweeping across the country on Sunday night. Lows of 6 to 9 degrees."

"Next week the rain will clear eastern areas early on Monday and it will become largely dry and settled through to mid-next week but remaining cool for the time of year."
