Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts freezing conditions this weekend with unsettled week ahead

Ireland is set for a chilly weekend with Met Eireann expecting temperatures to drop below zero.

While spring has been in the air this week with clear skies and sunny days, it looks as if conditions will turn noticeably nippy over the first weekend in March.

The forecast for the next three days shows the mercury below freezing every night.

Met Eireann is anticipating Friday to bring the coldest overnight temperatures with lows of -3 degrees.

The forecaster says most areas will be dry this evening and tonight with a mix of cloud and clear periods.

The lowest temperatures will range between -3 and 2 degrees, with the north and east set to bear the brunt of the cold snap.

Frost will also develop with a few mist and fog patches and light winds.

There will be a brisk start to Saturday as the frost clears.

While it will be a dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells, temperatures will reach highs of 6 to 9 degrees.

These conditions will persist into Saturday night, although it will get much chiller as temperatures fall to lows of -2 to 3 degrees Celcius.

Cloud and clear spells are expected nationwide overnight, although frost is likely to hit the east of the country in particular.

Met Eireann is expecting marginally warmer climes on Sunday with highs of 7 to 10 degrees.

The day will be generally dry with a mix of sunny spells and patchy cloud once again.

The pleasant weather will give way to baltic chills of -2 to 4 degrees on Sunday night into Monday morning.

In the east, it will be mostly dry with some clear spells and some frost will develop.

Meanwhile, cloud cover will increase in the west bringing with it the risk of some patchy drizzle along the coast later in the night.

As for the rest of next week, it will become "increasingly unsettled", according to Met Eireann.

The cold yet relatively settled outlook for the weekend will lead to patchy rain and drizzle on Monday, with temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.

On Tuesday we can expect rain to come in from the Atlantic and spread nationwide, with showers "occasionally heavy" that night.

Highest temperatures will reach 8 to 11 degrees, while winds will become increasingly fresh and gusty during the afternoon.

The forecaster is warning of "a spell of potentially very wet and windy weather on Wednesday followed by blustery showery conditions through to the end of the week".
