Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts brutal change as snow set to hit while temperatures plummet to -3C

Snow could arrive in Ireland as early as Monday night as temperatures plummet after a week of sunshine.

While a mostly good weekend of weather is in store, Met Eireann believes that conditions will begin to change on Sunday night as a cold front arrives on our shores.

This will last for several days, with "wintry showers" expected to fall mostly on Ulster and Connacht.

Sadly, temperatures will also fall to an icy -3C by Monday night.

A forecaster said: "Another dry and mostly sunny day on Saturday with just some patchy cloud developing at times during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 11C to 14C, in light northerly or variable breezes.

"Dry with clear spells, with some mist and fog developing. Frosty patches may also develop locally as temperatures fall to between -1C to 4C in light variable breezes.

"Easter Sunday will be dry over much of the country with the best of the sunshine in the south. It will be cloudier further north.

"Patchy light rain or drizzle will develop in Ulster and north Connacht during the afternoon, extending further south during the evening.

"Highest temperatures of 9C to 14C. However, becoming cooler through the afternoon as moderate westerly breezes veer northwesterly and freshen."

But despite the nice conditions over the weekend, it's the start of a new week when conditions will turn sour.

"Cold and breezy with cloud clearing south to leave sunny spells and scattered showers on Monday, some turning wintry especially over higher ground in Ulster and north Connacht.

"Highest temperatures of 4C to 8C in a bitter moderate to fresh and gusty northerly wind.

"That night will see scattered showers most frequent in the north and west and turning wintry especially on higher ground. Frost and icy patches will develop as temperatures fall to between -3C and 1C with winds backing northwesterly and easing mostly light.

"Continuing cold on Tuesday with sunny spells and scattered showers, some wintry, however they will become more isolated as the day progresses. Highest temperatures of 4C to 7C in a raw moderate to fresh north to northwest wind.

"Lowest temperatures of -3C to 2C generally on Tuesday night, holding a little warmer along western coasts in light to moderate westerly or variable breezes."
