Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast winter chill to arrive as temperatures plummet by 16C

Met Eireann are forecasting cooler conditions for the rest of the week with freezing temperatures by the weekend.

After a relatively mild start to November, the forecaster is predicting an overnight dip in the weather in the coming days.

It will be as warm as 16C in places today and get as low as freezing by the time we get to Sunday.

There is a risk of some frost in the next few nights with temperatures around 3C while during the daytime there will be plenty of rain.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Some bright spells this morning, especially in eastern area, but generally cloudy elsewhere and damp, with mist on high ground and on southern coasts. There'll be outbreaks of rain or drizzle throughout the day, most persistent in western and southern counties. Breezy too with fresh to strong southwest winds. A mild day with highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

What is the difference between snow, sleet and hail?

"Rain will turn heavier and more persistent in western coastal counties tonight, slowly spreading eastwards overnight. Staying mild for much of the night but becoming cooler towards dawn with temperatures decreasing to between 8 to 12 degrees. Southwest winds will be fresh to strong, but moderating from the west overnight.

"Rain in the eastern half of the country with clear eastwards throughout the morning. Brighter conditions with showers will quickly follow from the west. Showers may be heavy or prolonged in the afternoon with a risk of hail.

"Becoming windy also with southwest or west winds increasing strong to near gale and gusty, reaching gale force in western coastal regions. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

"Overall unsettled and changeable weather for the week."

Temperatures will dip to 3C on Wednesday night, Thursday night and 4C on Saturday night.

Sunday looks the coldest however with temperatures hitting freezing.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Turning cold overnight in clear spells with showers. Grass frost may form towards dawn with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees, holding milder in Munster."
