Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast warns of ominous airflow as huge change set to hit

Met Eireann have warned that a big change is on the way as temperatures fall and hail, rain and even thunder hit Ireland.

A high pressure system that had been "dominant" over the country in the last few days will make way for much more unsettled conditions this week.

The national forecaster wrote on Twitter: "High pressure loses its grip.

"After another sunny Sunday with start on Monday with highs in the mid to upper teens, colder air will push down from the north later in the day bringing an increase in cloud & showery rain.

"Tuesdays highs will be limited to the low teens."

Meanwhile today will see the last of the warm and sunny weather with highs of 17C, before wetter conditions move in later tonight.

And from Tuesday onwards a big change looks set to hit as showers turn more widespread, with the potential for hail and even thunder.

A Met Eireann forecaster said; "Frost and patches of mist or fog early this morning. These will clear. Today will be mainly dry with hazy sunshine. It will become cloudier over Ulster with light rain or drizzle developing in the north towards evening and extending over Ulster and north Connacht by nightfall. Highest temperatures 14 to 17 degrees with light variable or northwest breezes.

"Early tonight, light rain and drizzle over the northern half of the country will move southwards. Amounts will be very small. Showers will follow into the northwest and north overnight. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 8 degrees with light to moderate west to northwest breezes.

"Tuesday will start mainly dry in Munster and Leinster with bright intervals. Scattered showers in Ulster and Connacht will extend southwards and become widespread in the afternoon, some heavy and of hail and a few possibly thundery. Cool with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees and moderate north to northwest breezes.

"On Tuesday night, showers will continue in eastern parts of Leinster and Munster. It will be mainly dry elsewhere with some clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees with moderate northerly breezes."

"Wednesday will be a cool day with sunny spells and scattered showers, these mainly in Ulster, Leinster and north Connacht. Munster will be mainly dry. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh northeasterly winds. Wednesday night will be mainly dry with clear spells. There'll be some showers near north and east coasts. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with light northerly breezes.

"Thursday will continue cool with sunshine and showers, some of hail and a few thundery. Highest temperatures of just 9 to 11 degrees with light northerly or variable breezes. Thursday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells and with frost in places. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees."

And as we head into the weekend conditions will remain unsettled in many places, with lows of -1C and frost overnight on Friday.

Sunday and early next week look set to become "milder" but it will stay wet, as rain continues to spread across the country.

A forecaster added: "Friday will also be cool with sunny spells and with showers developing after a mainly dry start. Some of the showers will be heavy and of hail. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light variable or northeast breezes. Friday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells and with frost developing. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees.

"Saturday will bring sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with light breezes.

"Current indications suggest that Sunday and the early days of next week will be milder and unsettled with spells of rain or showers spreading eastwards across the country."
