Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast thunder and heavy rain as weekend washout expected

Thunder and heavy rain are set to batter Ireland over the next few days as a weekend washout is expected.

There will be some dry spells later on Friday after showers in most areas earlier in the day, with highs of 21C in the east.

And as we move into the weekend there will be more thundery showers on Saturday, followed by a mix of sunny spells and rain on Sunday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry in most areas at first today, with some bright spells in the east, but rain will develop in west and southwest coastal areas, extending gradually eastwards during the morning and afternoon, with some heavy and possibly thundery bursts, especially in the west and north. Humid, with hill and coastal fog developing.

"Some dry spells will develop later, with rain becoming more intermittent. Maximum temperatures 16 to 21 Celsius, warmest in eastern areas. Mostly moderate southerly winds, fresh in coastal areas and veering southwesterly later.

"Brightening up on Saturday, with sunny spells developing, but scattered showers will extend from Atlantic coastal areas, becoming widespread during the day. Some of the showers will be heavy and thundery during the afternoon and early evening. Maximum temperatures 15 to 20 Celsius, in mostly moderate westerly winds, gusty in showers.

"On Sunday there will be sunny spells and scattered showers. It will be cloudier in the far northwest though, with more persistent rain moving in from the Atlantic during the evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly winds, strong along the northwest coast."

There will be further rain on Monday and throughout the rest of next week there is more "unsettled and changeable" weather is expected.

A forecaster added: "Widespread rain is expected to affect the southwest on Monday morning, spreading to most parts of the country through the day and becoming heavy at times. There will be light to moderate southerly winds and afternoon temperatures will range 16 to 18 degrees.

"The last week of July is looking unsettled and changeable with further rain or showers moving through from the Atlantic, but some drier and brighter periods too."
