Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast sudden change as stormy conditions to arrive

High winds and heavy rain are set to move in across Ireland in the coming week with a potential for weather warnings by Thursday.

Low pressure systems from the Atlantic are likely to see an end to the pleasant weather of recent days and being far more unsettled conditions.

The rainy weather is expected to begin on Tuesday and could last all the way into the weekend.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "After a settled start to the week there is growing confidence in a more unsettled spell developing with wet and blustery conditions at times through the rest of the week and the weekend.

"Current indication are for the unsettled conditions to continue over the weekend, Saturday remaining mostly cloudy, but milder and with some scattered showers before a band of heavy rain crosses the country overnight followed by a cooler day with sunny spells and blustery showers on Sunday."

The next 48 hours however will be a lot more mixed with sunny spells as well as heavy periods of rain.

The forecaster added: "Any residual cloud and rain will clear the northeast to leave good sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly over the western half of the country during the morning, extending further east later in the day. Some of the showers will turn heavy at times especially in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees, in mostly moderate westerly winds.

"Mostly dry with clear spells in the east, cloudier in the west with scattered showers. Lowest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees in the west, a cooler 6 to 9 degrees elsewhere with some mist patches developing in light southerly or variable breezes.

"Tomorrow, Monday, mostly cloudy with light showers or patchy drizzle at times in the west. The showers will peter out in most areas during the afternoon, however they will persist along the northwest coast. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees, in light to moderate westerly breezes."
