Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast shows temperatures hitting above summer average before big change

Parts of Ireland may bask in temperatures higher than the July average this Friday and Saturday - but a cold end to the week is expected.

Met Eireann is forecasting a warm and sunny build-up to the weekend, with highs of 20C expected on Thursday.

The hot and dry conditions are set to continue over the Friday and Saturday.

However, the weather chiefs have hinted at a cold and wet Sunday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Current indications suggest Friday and the weekend will be mainly dry with settled conditions at first, with temperatures trending near average, perhaps slightly above in parts of the east and southeast.

"A transition to somewhat cooler conditions looks likely by the end of weekend, though, with some rain at times."

Meanwhile, parts of the country may see highs of 19C on Monday but all areas are set to experience rainfall.

It's going to be a wet start to the week for large chunks of Ireland, with Munster to get the heaviest downpours.

The forecaster said: "Today will start off mostly cloudy and misty with patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle heavy at times in south Munster. Rain and drizzle will clear eastwards by noon.

"Bright or sunny spells and some scattered showers will follow this afternoon. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with moderate westerly breezes."

They added: "Tonight will be dry with clear spells and some patches of mist.

"Towards morning, rain will develop along the west coast. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees."
