Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts poor conditions but hints at huge change next week

Ireland is set to be hit with a miserable enough week with mild temperatures and drizzle dominating the forecast this week.

Met Eireann has said that the outlook this week is likely to be grey skies with lots of cloud expected and average temperatures.

However, experts are warning that the weather will worsen towards the weekend with more widespread rain expected as the days go on.

Monday and Tuesday will see the most average weather with drizzle and cloud expected mainly in Ulster and Connacht.

It will be Wednesday however when heavier patches of rain are set to hit.

A forecaster said: "A mix of cloud and bright spells this morning with just a few light showers in the north and west. Cloud will soon increase however, with patchy light rain and drizzle pushing into the north and northwest through the afternoon and evening.

"Staying mostly dry elsewhere, with the best of the limited sunnier spells becoming confined to the south. Highs of 15 to 18 degrees, in a moderate northwest breeze, fresh on western and northern coasts.

"Continuing rather cloudy and staying mostly dry on Tuesday. However there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle, mainly over the west and north but sinking a little further south and east at times too. Highs of 16 degrees in the northwest to a mild 20 degrees in the southeast, in a moderate northwest breeze.

"Another largely cloudy day on Wednesday with most areas staying dry, however there will still be a little patchy light rain and drizzle. Highs of 16 to 19 degrees, mildest in the southeast, in a light westerly breeze. A spell of more general rain may skirt along the south coast through Wednesday evening and Wednesday night.

"A lot of cloud around again, but again mainly dry on Thursday. Just a few spots of drizzle, largely about coasts and hills. Some mild or warm sunshine will break through at times too. Highs of 16 to 20 degrees, in light winds.
A band of rain will move in from the southwest on Thursday night.

But it's not all bad news as temperatures will start to climb again by the weekend. And Met Eireann has also said that there could be the return of the hot weather once again by next week.

"Friday will likely be a wet day with outbreaks of rain sweeping northeastwards across the country. Clearing to showers later in the day. Highs of 16 to 20 degrees.

"Remaining unsettled with outbreaks of rain in most areas on Saturday. Mild with highs of 17 to 20 degrees.

"Sunny spells and scattered showers on Sunday, with highs of 17 to 20 degrees.

"Current indications suggest that it will become more settled and a little warmer early next week, with a lot of dry weather in light winds."
