Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast of unsettled conditions this week as rare 'Saharan' dust event hits

With the weather improving in recent days, the majority of people will be hoping that these sunny and bright conditions continue over the next few days.

Sadly, they won't because while the next few days are set to be mainly dry in most areas, conditions will become more unsettled for the weekend.

Aside from this, a rare dust event is also heading for Ireland.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather shared a map from the Dust Forecast Center predicting some "Saharan dust" arriving here this week.

He said: "Did you wash the windows at the weekend? Well, I’m afraid we could see some Saharan dust blowing up over us this week."

NASA's Earth Observatory also confirmed a plume was heading towards Europe, "stirred up" in northeastern Chad.

They explained: "Each year more than 180 million tons of dust blow out from North Africa, lofted out of the Sahara Desert by strong seasonal winds. Perhaps most familiar are the huge, showy plumes that advance across the tropical Atlantic Ocean toward the Americas. But the dust goes elsewhere, too—settling back down in other parts of Africa or drifting north toward Europe.

As for this week's weather, here's what's in store.

Tonight

It's set to be overcast and misty this evening. However, it will remain dry apart from isolated showers in the east. Some minor frost will set in where occasional clear spells occur.

Stay warm though because the coldest temperatures will range from 0 to 3 degrees.

Thursday morning and afternoon

Cloudy but dry in most areas. However, a few light showers will persist in places throughout the day. It's set to be mainly dry but conditions will become more unsettled as the weekend approaches.

Thursday night

Again, it's set to be mostly dry overnight aside from a few light showers which will mainly fall in the north and east. The mercury will drop between -1 and 4 degrees, coolest in the north.

Friday morning and afternoon

Yet again, a dry morning is expected with a mix of cloud and sunny spells.

The best sunshine will be in the eastern half of the country because some showers will affect the coastal fringes of Munster and Connacht.

It's also shaping up to be a relatively warm day with the highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees.

Friday night

Sadly, the rainy conditions will arrive on Friday night with rain and drizzle expected for Connacht and Munster, but it should be dry elsewhere with some clear spells.

Saturday morning and afternoon

A dull and cloudy day is expected with rain and drizzle moving eastwards. However, the majority of Leinster is set to stay dry.

Saturday night

A few outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue overnight but a patch of showery rain will approach from the west towards morning, affecting counties. on the west coast.

Sunday morning and afternoon

The rain will slowly move eastwards during the day as more scattered showers emerge.

Despite temperatures ranging between 8 to 11 degrees, showers will continue overnight with an unsettled period of weather set to extend into early next week as more rain and showers fall.
