Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast multiple warnings and rare Orange alert as brutal system hits

Met Eireann have issued warnings for multiple counties as a brutal weather system is set to hit Ireland.

A rare Status Orange alert is in place for Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow until noon on Thursday with heavy rain and flooding expected.

It reads: "Following significant accumulations of rainfall, there will be additional accumulations this morning, with flooding in places."

While the Status Yellow warning is in force for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny and Cork, also until noon on Thursday.

It reads: "Following recent heavy rain, there will be additional rainfall accumulations this morning, with flooding in places."

Meanwhile tonight is likely to see some further spells of rain in Munster and Leinster and even the possibility of flooding in some areas.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tonight, rain in Munster will move northeastwards across Leinster and later into east Ulster. The rain will be heavy at times in Munster and Leinster and there will be a chance of thundery downpours leading to localised flooding. In Connacht and west Ulster, and later in Munster, there will be clear spells and scattered showers. Cooler than recent nights, with lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees, in light to moderate southerly or variable winds.

"Any lingering rain in the east and northeast will clear into the Irish Sea on Friday morning and will be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers will become frequent and heavy in the west by afternoon, merging into longer spells of rain as they track eastwards. It will be driest with the best of the sunshine across the eastern half of the country. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds."

"Scattered showers will continue on Friday night, tending to move northeastwards through the night. It will become chilly under largely clear skies, with temperatures falling to between 3 and 7 degrees. Patches of mist and fog will develop too in a light southerly breeze."

However there is a slightly better outlook for the weekend with some spells of sunshine possible.

A forecaster added: "A day of sunny spells and showers on Saturday, most frequent over the western half of the country but becoming more isolated during the evening. Much of the eastern half of the country will see a lot of dry weather during the day with the best of the sunny spells here. Quite cool with highest temperatures ranging 10 to 13 degrees, in light to moderate south to southwest breezes.

"The rain will continue in the east and north on Sunday, with sunny spells and heavy showers elsewhere. It will be a breezy day with moderate to fresh southeast to southwest winds, strong at times near coasts. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees."
