Settled weather is expected for the coming days but temperatures are to dip as low as -3C on Sunday night.
Weather chiefs are predicting temperatures will recover the following day and mild, dry conditions will return.
It will still be chilly for the rest of January but no snow or hazardous weather is expected anytime soon.
The weekend will be largely dry with patches of drizzle in some areas and the best weather in the south of the country.
A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Rather cloudy and misty overall today but with some sunny spells developing also. Generally dry, apart from a little patchy light rain or drizzle in places. Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, mildest in the south, in light southerly or variable breezes.

"Patchy light rain or drizzle will move southeastwards over the country tonight. Some clear breaks too with a touch of frost in parts and some mist and fog patches. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees with light southwesterly or variable winds, veering northwesterly and freshening along the north coast.
"Sunday morning will see any patchy light rain or drizzle soon clearing. Brightening up in most parts with good sunny spells developing. Light to moderate north to northwest winds, will become variable in the evening. Highest temperatures of 6 or 9 degrees.
"Sunday night will be dry and cold with long clear spells. A few patches of mist or fog will develop in light, variable winds. There will be a widespread frost setting in as temperatures drop to between -3 and +1 degrees."
