Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast last days of sun before 'heavy rain' returns

The summer is officially over and it looks like the weather is also preparing for the autumn ahead.

Forecasts for the days ahead indicate that there will just be a few more short spells of sun before the rain returns.

Met Eireann is predicting humid but unsettled conditions for the rest of the week before a big change at the weekend.

Wednesday will be generally dry but with lots of cloud and isolated patches of drizzle.

Some sunny spells will develop during the day, the best of these across the western half of the country, with temperatures hitting highs of 16 to 20C.

It will be mostly cloudy overnight but staying largely dry with just isolated patches of mist and drizzle about and minimum temperatures of 8 to 12C.

Met Eireann says it will continue "predominantly dry throughout much of the week with light winds and temperatures around average for the time of year, in the high teens or low 20s".

However, wet weather looks set to return later in the weekend.

A forecaster said: "Thursday will be generally dry again, with just isolated patches of drizzle. There will be variable cloud cover, with some sunny spells at times, the best of which will be in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20C, coolest along the east coast in light to occasionally moderate easterly breezes."

Thursday night will be "dry with long clear spells". However, pockets of fog will develop towards dawn in near calm conditions., with lowest temperatures of 8 to 12C.

"A mix of cloud and clear spells with just the chance of some well-scattered patches of light rain or drizzle mostly in Munster" are forecast for Friday, with temperatures rising to between 17 to 20C.

As for the weekend, Saturday morning will bring "sunny spells and scattered showers", with cloud increasing from the southwest during the afternoon.

The national forecaster said that "current indications are that rain will follow from the southwest through the evening hours, turning heavy at times", with highest temperatures of 16 to 20C.

On Sunday, persistent and occasionally heavy rain will clear in northern parts in the morning with sunny spells and scattered heavy showers following from the south to all parts during by afternoon.

Highest temperatures of 18 to 21C "in moderate to fresh southeasterly winds veering southerly and moderating after the rain clears".

Current indications are that it will remain unsettled early next week with rain and blustery showers at times along with highs in the mid to high teens, Met Eireann added.
