Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast gloomy and rain-soaked August

With the heatwave now over and thunderstorms being forecast for parts of Ireland, the return of indoor dining and drinks couldn't have come at a better time.

While outdoor dining is still preferable for some, it looks like the marquees and terraces will be pretty empty throughout August with "a significant change in synoptic pattern" bringing in a spell of rain.

While it's not all bad, the rainfall amounts for the month ahead are projected to be slightly above normal for this time of year.

Here's what's expected for the next four weeks...

This week - Monday, 26 July to Sunday, 1 August

The heatwave has been replaced with more erratic and thunder conditions as a synoptic pattern with more low-pressure dominating.

The average temperatures during the period are expected to be near the seasonal average but it will still be several degrees cooler than the last few weeks.

In terms of rainfall, after the recent dry period, Ireland will experience more typical amounts of rain for August.

10-20mm of rainfall is expected to fall in many areas during the week.

Week 2 - Monday, 2 August to Sunday, 8 August

A trend towards low-pressure dominance will come into effect with changeable and showery weather conditions likely.

Met Eireann has said: "A north or northwesterly air-flow is likely to be prevalent during the period. Mean air temperatures during the week are forecast to be slightly below average for August. Precipitation amounts are projected to be near or possibly slightly above normal for the week.

Week 3 - Monday, 9 August to Sunday, 15 August

As the month develops, the meteorological service is less confident about the conditions but the current indications suggest that the weather will be more changeable with low pressure pushing in at times.

The average temperatures during this particular week are expected to be close to the average for August but the rainfall amounts are forecast to be slightly above normal.

Week 4 - Monday 16 August to Sunday 22 August

Once again, the forecast isn't too concrete, with Met Eireann saying: "Only weak trends by forecast week 4 but there is a continued signal for a mixed weather pattern. Temperature and rainfall predictions are both trending towards the climatological average."
